I think you're supposed to stop caring about fads, trends, and being cool when you're elderly. I stopped caring at age 30.

This is much too young, society would say, to stop caring about keeping up with the latest fashion trends or behaving appropriately in public. And I could care less.

At my age, I am probably supposed to request diamond earrings or at least a cute pair of shoes for Christmas and birthdays. Me? All I wanted is a Bundt pan. And I am perfectly willing to shout to the world that instead of questioning, or wishing his wife would ask for a fashionable purse to replace the REI backpack she takes everywhere, the #besthusbandever simply shook his head and lovingly gave me a Bundt pan for Christmas.

Homemade kimchee! I know, you might think I'm crazy, but I did promise that we made nearly everything from scratch, did I not? While I may be crazy, I am decidedly not crazy for making homemade kimchee. It's absurdly easy, delicious, and a splendid way to impress your more adventurous friends with a homemade dish this holiday season.

If you are an especially good pioneer, you can make giant batches of this kimchee and can it properly for long term storage.

Dear friends, I have already confessed that despite my love for Thanksgiving menu planning, I am far too spontaneous indecisive and easily distracted to have all of the dishes on our Thanksgiving menu trialed, tested, perfected, and posted weeks or even days prior to the holiday.

I enjoy planning the Thanksgiving menu almost as much as I enjoy cooking it. Almost. Thanksgiving is one of my very favorite holidays, naturally - I spend every day contemplating food and saying "thank you" many more times than necessary, so an entire holiday focused on cooking and being thankful? My holiday heaven.

So I settle in, with magazines, cookbooks, Pinned recipes, and favorite food blogs close at hand, to plan our Thanksgiving menu over many happy evenings of contemplation.

Given my propensity for stuffing massive amounts of spinach and other leafy greens (like this lovely GIANT tat soi above) in my breakfast smoothies, it's astounding that I hadn't thought of adding spinach to other breakfast foods. Admittedly, though, I had been marching stubbornly along having smoothies for my veggie infused breakfasts, until I stumbled across a reference to spinach oatmeal.

Why are we the 21st Century Urban Pioneers? Glad you asked!

Cooking in our kitchen, I try to harken back to an earlier time, back when foods were prepared from scratch and processed foods were non-existent. My Grandmother was born just after the turn of the 20th century, and when processed "convenience" foods began emerging she was properly horrified.

After all our years together, I no longer really need to ask #besthusbandever (yep, he has his own hashtag ;-) what he would like for dessert.

Check out the new blog design! I am super psyched. After 7 years (gasp!), it was time for an aesthetic update. After all, even my own style has changed over time (mostly increasingly ceasing to care about what is supposed to be in style because I am not going to wear high-wasted jeans and crop tops ever, thank you very much).
