Why are we the 21st Century Urban Pioneers? Glad you asked!
Cooking in our kitchen, I try to harken back to an earlier time, back when foods were prepared from scratch and processed foods were non-existent. My Grandmother was born just after the turn of the 20th century, and when processed "convenience" foods began emerging she was properly horrified. I grew up with stories of her alarm over the artificial color of bright orange "margarine," and her puzzlement as to why you would pay for a jar of apple jelly - "It's just water and sugar! No fruit at all!" - when you could make hearty apple butter at home instead.

Thus, in this age of shrink wrapped, vacuum-packed, already prepared everything, I hope to be a pioneer in returning to the revolutionary notion of preparing real, whole foods at home from scratch.
Also, the early pioneers bravely left their familiar lives behind, packed up everything they owned, and headed west in search of a new life. (They also killed and displaced Native Americans, which should not be overlooked or excused - just making sure we get our history straight). In a more humane way but with the same adventurous spirit, as an active duty Air Force family we too pack up our lives, leave everything we know behind, and head off to a new homeland every two to three years when my husband is re-stationed.
Our travels have gradually brought us north-west, from our roots in Louisiana all the way to our current home in northern California. Who knows where our journey will take us next? I can only promise it will be crazy, entertaining, and delicious.
